Friday 1st May 2009 Surrey Elite Reserve Section Battersea Ironsides Reserves (1) 3 Reigate Priory Reserves (1) 2 Davies1,Hamilton1
Priory Reserves were involved in an entertaining game of football against a very good Battersea Ironsides Reserve outfit. In the first 15 minutes Priory struggled to contain their opponents as Ironsides flowing football and strength up front continued to put Priory under pressure. Ironsides took their deserved lead as a weak back pass allowed the Ironsides stricker to loop his shot over the advancing Martin in Priorys goal. However , Priory came more into the game and started to grow in confidence as they found their passing game. Following some neat football Davies found some good space on the right flank and from the through ball was able to chip his shot into the far corner for Priorys equaliser. In the second half , again Ironsides started the stronger. Their right winger was allowed space to attack Priorys left flant and the strike on goal found the back of the net. Priory never gave up and continued to try and stay with the game plan. A quick break by Ironsides found Priory stretched and the subsequent cross into the box was converted. With some changes Priory again started to create some more chances. Following a Lawrence cross , Hamilton nipped in to score Priorys second. In the final 5 minutes Priory pinned Ironsides in their own box. A sequence of corners saw Priory hit the post and a clearance off the line. However , Priory just could'nt find their equaliser. A good game for Priory as they tried to develope their game, some positive signs for the future. Priory were still on a high from last weeks victory and the aim was to continue in the same manner. This weeks game was a must win to move out the bottom two of the Surrey Elite Reserve league. Against a team that they had met three times already this season. Priory started the brighter with some flowing football, Costaschuck applied the pressure on there back line whilst Peter Stone won the ball in the middle and spread the ball to Taylor and Holmes. The first half was well contested by both teams, but finished 0-0. Priory came out for the second half knowing they had to take their chances and apply more pressure on Horsley across the park. Grant Frost was working well down the left and taking on their right back and delivering a lot of pressure on Horsley. 10 minutes into the second half Priory were having the majority of the possession and opportunities when Lawrence played the ball over the top putting Joe Warnham though, his pace allowed him to get away from the defence and calmly slot the ball past the keeper to put Priory 1-0 up. Priory had a lot of quality on the bench and with 25 minutes to go it was time to sure up the midfield with Stuart Morley and bring some extra pace to the front line so Charlie Reid came on. Priory looked solid but could not take their chances, Brad Martin in goal was having a quiet game but with the score at 1-0 Horsley always had a chance to get back into the game. With a couple of minutes left on the clock priory attacked and Nick Taylor played Joe Warnham through who struck the ball into the back of the net, securing the victory. Lifting Priory up out of the bottom two. Man of the Match- Joe Warnham Team- Martin, Taylor, McClaughlan, Wolstone, Holmes, Lawrence, Stone, Frost, Williams, Costaschuck, Warnham, Morley, Reid. Saturday 7th March 2009 Surrey Elite Reserve Challenge Cup Milford & Witley Reserves 1 Reigate Priory Reserves 3 Costaschuk1,Frost1,Holmes1 Priory travelled to Milford for the second time this season with the aim to get through to the next round of the League Cup. They started more vibrant than their opposition, keeping the ball well and battling hard to win it back. Within the first few minutes Priory had a couple of chances on goal, the movement from Micheal Costaschuck and Grant Frost troubled their back line keeping them deep in their own half. Priory continued to defend strongly and pressured their defence and a break through from Michael Costaschuck saw him cut inside the centre back and placed the ball into the top corner, giving the keeper no chance. An excellent start to his Priory return. The half continued to in the same vein, Dave Mclaughlin and Nick Taylor sured up the centre of defence and Brad "Chico" Martin made some important saves to maintain the lead. With a few minutes left of the first half priory pushed to extend their lead, Aaron Lawrence saw Grant Frost make a run from wide towards the edge of the box and played a diagonal ball onto his run, he took a touch and sliced it across goal into the side netting, half time came and Reigate deserved their lead. The Tacticians of Lomas and Vezza changed the formation for the second half and Reigate played a 4-5-1, with Dave Williams pressuring their third centre midfielder. Milford and Witley used the Slope advantage and attacked constantly but the defence showed resilience to keeping their lead. Witley managed to get a goal back with 20 minutes to go from a corner and then they stepped up their game. Priory started to look ragged and were struggling to keep the ball like earlier in the game. The onslaught continued apart from a few Priory breaks. With 10 minutes to go Priory won a free kick on the edge of the box, Aaron Lawrence stepped up to take the free kick, bent it over the wall, it beat the keeper but also hit the underside of the bar and bounced out. Was that Priory chance to secure victory? With 2 minutes to go priory started to press Milford by hitting the channels and getting in behind their defence, from this Priory won a corner. Aaron Lawrence delivered a corner which dropped in the 6 yeard box and Alex Holmes ran onto and belted into the net to the relief of the Priory management. The final whistle blew on the restart, Priory had taken their chances well today. Man of the Match- Michael Costaschuck Team Sheet- Martin, Markwick, Holmes, Mclaughlin, Taylor, Donald, Frost, Stone, Lawrence, Williams, Costachuck, Hodges. Saturday 28th February 2009 Surrey Elite Reserve Section Reigate Priory Reserves (1) 1 Eversley Reserves (3) 4 WilliamsD1
Having suffered a heavy defeat earlier in the season in corresponding away fixture Reigate Priory went into this game knowing it would be a real challenge from the outset. The game started brightly with Priory on top throughout the early stages of the match. Priory managed to create several shooting opportunities on the Eversley goal without managing to really test the goalkeeper. Eventually Priory did manage to capitalise on their bright start and take a deserved 1-0 lead. Some neat interplay from Priory resulted in a long range strike that cannoned back of the woodwork to allow Dave Williams (Priory's top goal scorer this season) to show his predatory instincts and tap home past a helpless goalkeeper. After a bright start from the home side the flow of the game then changed due to a mad fifteen minutes from Priory’s perspective. Firstly a miscued clearance from the Priory defence fell straight to Eversley’s creative midfield player who duly picked out his centre forward with the Priory defence pushed high up the pitch. The front man took advantage of the chance and finished calmly past the on rushing goal keeper to make it 1-1. Within a matter of minutes a poorly misplaced back pass presented the easiest of chances to the Eversley front man who made no mistake in making it 2-1 putting Eversley into the lead for the first time in the game. To compound Priory’s misery Eversley extended their lead to 3-1 just before half time when some interplay down the right flank allowed a low ball to be driven into the box which was swept into the net past the helpless Martin in the Priory goal. Despite this mad fifteen minute period Priory looked comfortable for long spells in the first half and had the majority of possession. The Eversley midfield had to work hard to compete despite some tactical reshuffles throughout the first half by Priory. The sides went in at half time with the score 3-1 to Eversley. At the start of the second half the pattern of the game continued with Priory starting well and both sides attempting to establish control of the game. Priory continued to have long spells of possession but Eversley always looked dangerous on the break, mainly due to the movement of their strikers. Eversley eventually managed to kill the game by adding a scrappy fourth goal on the break halfway through the second half. The goal was scored after a low cross from the right eluded the Priory defence and the ball was squeezed in from an almost impossible angle by a combination of 3 players. Final result: 4-1. Ultimately the mad fifteen minutes cost priory and they will need to cut these errors out to have any chance of a result at Milford and Whitley in the cup next weekend. On the positive side this was a much improved performance compared to the defeat to Eversley earlier in the season. Particular mention goes to Tim Donald who completed his first 90 minutes for the reserves and put in an impressive performance. Michael Costachuk also made an eagerly anticipated return and showed his class in glimpses. Team: Martin, Rowlands, Allen, Heale, Hamilton, Taylor, Morley, Stone, McLaughlin, Williams, Donald – Subs: Avery, Lomas, Costaschuk, Cook. Saturday 21st February 2009 Surrey Elite Subsidiary Trophy Group C Match Elm Grove Reserves 4 Reigate Priory Reserves 3 Having already played Elm Grove twice in the league this season and once already in the Subsidiary Cup Priory knew that this was going to be a tough return fixture, with Priory having won the home leg of this tie. As predicted the first 10 minutes of the game was a keenly fought contest with both sides trying to take control of the game. The game was very compact with few chances created in this period of play. However gradually Priory started to have more of the play, but Elm Groves centre forward always looked dangerous and was put clean through on a number of occasions. His speed and movement created problems for Priory all afternoon. In the end it was a great strike from Will Wornham that broke the deadlock half way through the first half. He received a ball just outside the Elm Grove penalty area and his tremendous strike towards the centre of the goal beat the Elm Grove keeper and rattled the back of the net. Elm Grove continued to push forward and their number 9 had a number of chances which were saved by some excellent goalkeeping from Priory keeper, Martin. In the end a through ball split open the Priory defence with the Elm Grove striker riding a challenge from Priory defender Heale to run on and place his shot in the top right hand corner of the Priory goal. With the game evenly poised it was Priory's turn to take the lead when some neat passing which ended with the ball breaking to Priory striker Williams who finished from close range to make it 2-1. With half time approaching it looked like that Priory would take this lead into the break, but with minutes remaining a half clearance by Priory from a defending corner hit an Elm Grove striker. The ball rebounded back into the penalty area and Elm Grove managed to bundle the ball over the line to make it 2-2. This proved to be a blow to Priory who struggled to maintain their momentum at the start of the second half. With both teams creating few chances in the first 15 minutes of the second half the game was starting to get stretched. In the end it was a strike from Elm Grove mid way in the Priory half that beat the Priory defence and went in past the unsighted goalkeeper. With the play starting to open up Priory began to create a number of chances and some good play saw Priory striker Joe Wornham turn an Elm Grove defender and strike a sweet shot past the closing down defenders into the top right hand corner of the net. At this point Priory picked up the pace of the game and put some real pressure on the Elm Grove defence. McLaughlin, Read and Morley for Priory created a number of good chances that were squandered. With both teams tiring Elm Grove were awarded a penalty when Will Wornham as adjudged to have bought down an Elm Grove striker on the edge of the penalty area. The penalty kick was saved by Martin. At 3-3 Priory really started to exert more pressure and looked the more likely to win the game. However a long throw near by Elm Grove near to the penalty area was headed in directly at the near post by an Elm Grove striker despite being closely marked by the Priory defence. Priory continued to pressure Elm Grove and Morley had a great chance to level the game at 4-4. Morley's powerful shot was some how diverted by the Elm Grove keeper onto the cross bar and back down onto the goal line, however the ball was adjudged not to have crossed the line. 4-3 at the final whistle was a hard result on the Priory who matched the commitment of Elm Grove throughout with a draw looking more the likely outcome. In the first half Priory put in a good performance against Redhill Reserves and held the first half to 0-0. Priorys best chances fell to Seldon who was thwarted by some fine goalkeeping. In the second half Redhill U18s were quite lively , but it was Priory who took the lead from a well placed strike by Jamie Williams. It looked like that Priory were going to hold out for the win but for a superb strike from a Redhill midfielder with 2 mins to go. Priory were good value for the draw with particular credit going to Bradley Marting for pulling off some great saves
