REIGATE PRIORY RESERVES SEASON 2006/07

Saturday 24th February 2007 - Redhill & District Division 1

SOUTH PARK RESERVES (2) 4    REIGATE PRIORY RESERVES (1) 1

                                                       Lawrence1

Priory Reserves needed a victory at South Park on saturday to keep the pressure on what is a tight title race. Unfortunately they achieved the worst possible start , going two goals behind in the first 15 mins as South Park ripped through Priorys defence. Priory then settled and started to get back into the game. Chances came and went and it took a glorious strike from Aaron Lawrence to bring the score back to 2-1. Priory then maintained their pressure to half time but just could not get the equalizer. Hoping for more of the same in the second half the game was evenly contested. With 20 mins remaining a South Park floated free kick into the Priory box was uncontested and the South Park Striker converted with a header. Priory were unable to find the momentum they had at the end of the first half and South Park went on to score their fourth and subsequently secure the 3 points.

REED (0) 1    REIGATE PRIORY RESERVES (1) 3

                       Avery2,CostashukW1

In another weekend of poor weather , Reigate Priorys’ reserve team fixture away to Reed survived. In difficult playing conditions the game was evenly balanced with both teams having limited opportunities. The game opened up when Priory were awarded a penalty. Averys shot from the spot was saved in the first instance , but the rebound fell kindly for Avery to convert at the second attempt. Reed picked up the pace and started to assert some pressure. Priorys back four of Wilmot , Chapman, Udall and Cook limited Reed and Martin in goal was rarely tested. At times Priorys central midfield of Avery and Markwick  controlled the play well and distribution to the flanks to Taylor and Young often led to goal scoring opportunities for Marshall and William Costaschuk  up front. Costaschuk on his return looked lively and caused the Reed defence problems with his pace.

In the second half Reed were on the offensive looking for the equaliser. Reed brought the game level from a corner when their striker headed passed Martin. With the game evenly balanced , it was Priory who regained the initiatitive when Averys long range strike beat the diving keeper. As the game progressed Priory extended their lead when William Costascuk converted after his initial shot was saved by the keeper. Priory maintained their control with young players Ainsworth and Michael Costaschuk coming on. A good three points which takes Priory back into the top spot of Division One.

BROCKHAM (1) 3    REIGATE PRIORY RESERVES (0) 1

                                 WilliamsJ1

Brockham away was always going to be a testing match for Reigate, this proved evident over 90 minutes. Brockham from the kick off started stronger applying pressure on the midfield and defence for the good part of 15 minutes. Reigate however had spells of good football when breaking down the wings and sweeping the ball in to the box. Brockham broke the deadlock around the 25th minute with a wonder strike in to the top right corner of the goal. Reigate saw out the rest of the half.

The second half saw Brockham starting strong again. And it was not long before confusion in the defence saw the second Brockham goal slotted in to the net. A near headed miss by Christoforou was an excellent chance to pull one back, when a Chapman free kick to the far post was headed wide. Reigate however did score when Jamie Williams kept the ball in play controversially and dazzled Brockhams back line slotting the ball in, at an extremely tight angle. Reigate applied further pressure hitting the crossbar, however there hopes were shot down when Brockham broke strongly and scored their third. It was a tough battle for Reigate, credit to Brockham for there fast paced football.

REIGATE PRIORY RESERVES (2) 5    BOOKHAM 'A' (0)

Mountain1,Marshall1,WilliamsJ2,Taylor1

Reigate saw this fixture as an opportunity to take revenge for there defeat to Bookham away. A fully focused Reigate applied intense pressure on Bookham from the kick off. It was not long before Marshal penetrated the back of the net with a well taken shot.  The pressure continued from Reigate and soon after they were awarded an obvious penalty when Michael Ainsworth was brought down. Barry Mountain stepped up and hit a well taken penalty.

The second half saw Bookhams centre half sent of with a double yellow. Bookham began to crumble with second half goals from Nick Taylor, Jamie Williams 2 . Reigate battled extremely hard throughout the game from the defence through to the strikers. Christoforou was awarded man of the match in an outstanding team performance.

REIGATE PRIORY RESERVES (4) 6    REED (0) 1

Avery2,Ainsworth2,Christoforu1,Reid1

Reigate priory took on Reed at home on Saturday the 9th. It was shaping up to be a tough game, but straight from the off Priory’s fast paced football was too strong for Reed to handle. It was not long before Priory’s outstanding midfield consisting of Christoforou, Lawrence, Williams, Taylor put Williams through down the wing to win a questionable penalty. Ainsworth from the spot slipped the ball in the bottom right corner.

The pressure carried on with hard battles being won Christoforou and Lawrence in centre midfield, which allowed Taylor on the right to play some excellent football feeding, with a cross, Avery who scored with a half volley. Priory at 2:0 up, were still working as if it was 0:0. For the third goal, a long throw by Lawrence, met by Avery with a silky header beating the keeper. The rare pressure Priory had ,was handled by the defence well, but unfortunately saw Taylor badly injured and taken off. Reid came on to take his place on the right side of midfield.

Priory’s attack continued, allowing some smart football to feed in Ainsworth for his second of two well taken goals.

The second half saw Reed play some better football with Priory’s work rate dropping slightly. The fast pace from Reid and quality finish gave Priory an early fifth. After some end to end football it was Christoforou who took charge in centre midfield majestically collecting the ball and producing a wonder strike which no one could handle finding the bottom right hand corner at a possible 35 yards. The midfield and defence lapsed momentarily to concede by an individually worked goal.

All members of the squad had an excellent game and a well deserved win.

REIGATE PRIORY RESERVES (2) 3    CATERHAM OB (0) 1

Christoforu1,WilliamsJ2

Priory reserves secured their fourth home win out of four against top of the table Caterham Old Boys on Saturday.  Priorys first game of the season was away to Caterham and early goals given away cost the reserves the game that day, but an early strike from an elated Cristoforou gave Priory the lead within 10 mins of kick off this time round.  A corner swung in from the right was not cleared by Caterham and Cristoforou stuck with a sweet strike into the corner of the net.  The next 20 mins were dominated by a strong Caterham side that were easily coping with some of the high balls hit forward by Priory and were dominating the midfield at times. Man of the match Bradley in goal saved Priory on more than one occasion with a string of fine saves to keep the reserves in the match.  Priory rode the storm however and a knockdown from centre back Udall saw Williams bury the ball in the net to make it 2-0 at half time.
The second half saw Priory get the ball back on the deck and it was now the home side that started to control the game.  Proceedings were held up for some 15-20 mins while one of the Caterham players, who had an unfortunate fall and suffered a back injury, was treated by paramedics on the pitch. All those associated with Reigate Priory Football Club wish the player a speedy recovery.  The game restarted with some 12 mins remaining on the clock and Priory remained resolute in defence and strong in midfield as they scored a breakaway goal finished off by neatly by Williams.  In the last minute of the game Caterham ruined Priorys potential clean sheet with a consolation goal with just seconds remaining on the clock, it was far too late however and the reserves walked away with a well deserved 3 points to remain 2nd in the table just 2 points behind Caterham Old Boys.

WALTON HEATH (0) 2   REIGATE PRIORY RESERVES (0) 1

                                        Hadley1

Priory Reserves slumped to their 2nd defeat of the season by being edged out 2-1 away to Walton Heath.  After a slow start Priory started to carve out some clear cut chances and had they put them away, it would have probably been too far to come back for Walton Heath.  Williams playing down the left wing caused all sorts of problems for Walton Heaths right back, putting a ball in for Lane which was unfortunately put over the bar.  Another Williams near post cross saw Hadley get a foot in before 2 defenders only to see the ball narrowly flick over the bar from a tight angle.  Walton Heath then started to put more pressure on the game and their hard fighting game plan started to cause Priory problems.  With Priory closed down quickly possession was soon squandered and Walton Heath started to create one or two chances with some shots just flying wide of the Priory goal.  However it was Priory who were unlucky to not be going into the break a goal up, Lane picked up the ball up from midfield and lined up a cracking 30 yard strike only to see the effort hit the underside of the bar and rebound to safety, unfortunately the linesman was not Russian this time.
The second half kicked off and Walton Heath soon piled on more pressure, with some of their pace up front causing the Priory backline real problems.  It was the nature of the first goal that would have frustrated Priory management more than anything, the ball was given away cheaply up front and Walton Heath strung a few passes together and scored a rather simple goal.  Priory fought back to level the score when a Lawrence shot from 25 yards was blocked by the Walton Heath defence and Hadley, first to react, made it 1-1 with a simple finish.  Frustratingly, Walton Heath made it 2-1 virtually from the kick off, another goal where the ball was not cleared properly and it soon ended up in the back of the net.  Priorys' frustration at some of the decisions were clearly evident as Markwick was booked for kicking the ball away, however the Walton Heath central midfield player was also booked for raising his hands to a Priory player.  Some Priory pressure near the end of the game saw Williams shoot narrowly wide again and after a clear handball in the penalty area was not seen by the referee it was not to be Priorys' day as the game finished 2-1.  A break in the league season for the reserves next week in the shape of the Surrey Cup, however a more determined performance will be required if the reserves are to advance to the second round.
