OVERTON ATHLETIC 3 REIGATE PRIORY A 2

Priory knew that this game would be a hard one following Overton’s good result to Woodcote the week previous but spirits were high following Priory’s two consecutive wins in recent weeks.

Priory had a completely new back four but the midfield and striking partnership were much the same. The first half was an even battle until with only a couple of minutes to go before half time a dubious penalty was awarded to Overton who duly scored.

At half time Priory knew they could win the game and started the stronger in the second half but after 10 minutes of play a counter attack by Overton saw the Priory defence stretched for once and the score was 2-0. Minutes later Priory goally made a fantastic 1 on 1 save to deny Overton going 3-0 up.

This seemed to raise Priory’s intensity as they turned up the heat and some good play by Paul Hodges, who chased a lost cause, playing on when the Overton players stopped for what they thought was handball, crossed the ball into the six yard box from the right hand side corner flag for Priory striker Adam Jones to stroke the ball into the net.

Priory picked up the pace to get the all important equaliser. Notably Stu Porte’s volley outside the box bringing Overton’s goally to make a fine save. However the game could have been finalised if it were not for another fine save by Connolly when an Overton striker came 1 on 1 with the Priory keeper, to deny Overton to score.

Ten  minutes of the game remaining and Adam Jones had a strike that saw a deflection into Overton’s goal. Priory felt that this was there chance to get the 3 points and kept dominating play, however could not get that all important goal. With the last couple of minutes of play remaining Overton had a corner which was not dealt with Priory’s defence and the final score was 3-2.

REIGATE PRIORY A  5 OXTED A 2

Following last week’s result Manager Stuart Porte decided to keep to his new formation of a 4-2-1-3 system.

The new formation meant that Priory took the initiative with some attractive football especially down the right hand side between Lee Wilmott, Rob Besley & Paul Hodges. However, a lapse in concentration by the Priory when a throw in had been given the wrong way, lead to an up and under which goal keeper Marc Connolly struggled with in the sun and could only knock onto the bar and Oxted’s striker was quickest to react to make it 1-0.

This was the wake up call the Priory needed and it wasn’t too long until Priory equalised. A free kick taken from Rob Besley fizzed over the Oxted wall’s defence and landed into the right side, top hand corner of Oxted’s net without the keeper even moving. Oxted heads seemed to drop and so it was inevitable that Priory went into half time 2-1 up. Some nice play formed once again on the right hand side and some nice one touch football by Priory resulted in Paul Hodges striking the ball into the net.

Daniel Flint then started the second half in style from the second half kick off. Some good closing down on Oxted’s defence by Chris Dalton caused panic and a ball passed across the box resulted in Daniel Flint stealing the ball and calmly slotting the ball into the net.

Priory would have probably felt that Oxted would now crumble but instead Oxted played far more aggressively resulting in some good possession and minutes later this possession was followed by a wonder strike by their number 10 to make it 3-2.

Priory were still in charge but a counter attack by Oxted resulted in a finger tip save onto the bar from Reigate Priory keeper Connolly, keeping Priory in the lead. This may have been the most important part of play in the game as soon after Connolly did one of his wonder kicks from his box, deep into the Oxted half which Priory player Chris Dalton chased down, the Oxted keeper was left in no man’s land as the ball bounced over his head into the goal without anybody having a touch. Marc Connolly calmly taking the accolade. This was not going to be quiet day for Connolly as 5 minutes later his scuffed goal kick meant Oxted No 10 was in again to make the game 4-3.

Priory once again resumed to their attacking nature and a run from right back Lee Wilmott from within his own half meant a 1 on 1 with Oxted keeper which Wilmott slotted away with ease. Celebrations from the Priory resulted in disbelief that the goal was not given due to a Priory player being active in play and off side was given. This made Priory fight even more for their win and Daniel Flint made it 5-2 to the Priory with a few minutes remaining.

REIGATE PRIORY A  7 COURT LODGE 0

A strong Priory ‘A’ Team with a trio of good strikers meant Manager Stuart Porte deciding to use a different formation to usual, using a 4-2-1-3 system.

This new formation meant that it took Priory a little while to get use to but after 15 minutes or so, started to dominate proceedings. After about 20 minutes some smart team play resulted in a good strike from Alex Holmes going into the Court Lodge net. Minutes later a moment of brilliance from Charlie Reid had made it 2-0 for The Priory. Reid’s goal was of sheer class knocking the ball over 2 defenders and then driving it past the outstretched Court Lodge goal keeper. Then some Court Lodge ill discipline saw a reckless challenge by one of their defender’s on Priory striker, Adam Jones resulting in an immediate red card. Still some more ill discipline by Court Lodge was to follow just minutes later as another reckless challenge inside Court Lodge’s box saw Charlie Reid brought down and a penalty for Priory. Super Cool, Rob Besley then slotted the ball into the net without the goal keeper even moving. 3-0 to Priory and they were cruising.

However, the last 10 minutes of the first half saw Court Lodge start to make a game of it as Priory had taken their foot off the pedal and Priory were lucky to not concede a goal at half time.

The second half saw Priory continue to play under the same formation and they continued to play with an aggressive nature against 10 man Court Lodge. Priory scored four more goals:Charlie Reid, Justin Branden, Mark Hatley and Priory Man of the Match, Paul Hamilton finishing the proceedings with the last goal of the game.

Unfortunately, some more ill discipline in the game saw two further red cards one for each team. Manager Stuart Porte was very pleased with his team’s efforts and Priory will go into the next game against Oxted with confidence that they can score goals and also keep a clean sheet.

RACING EPSOM 7 REIGATE PRIORY A  1

The Priory ‘A’ Team competed well in the first half, scoring the first goal of the game with some neat play at the back into midfield and then through to striker Charlie Reid to score. Unfortunately this seemed to be the wake up call for Racing Epsom as they started to pick up the pace of the game and at half time they had scored to make it 1-1.

At half time Manager Stu Porte reminded the Priory team that he did not want to see another 2nd half performance like last week but instead Priory repeated it with conceding 6 goals.

SHELTON SPARTANS 7  REIGATE PRIORY A  4

Manager Stu Porte has been extremely pleased with his players over the last four or five games with their team work and fight, playing some very attractive football but had not seen much luck. He hoped for the luck to be in Priory’s favour this week in a crunch game where Priory simply had to win to move out of the bottom of the table.

The first half really saw Priory take the game to Shelton Spartans and as a result Priory were 3-0 up within 20 minutes. Goals from Adam Jones (2) and Chris Dalton.

Shelton Spartans had indeed started slowly, but Priory seemed to take the foot of the gas and let Spartan’s into the game from a free kick just outside Priory’s box with about 5 minutes to go in the first half. Some lapse in concentration from the defence meant Shelton Spartan’s No 12 sneaking in from the back to score an easy header to make it 3-1 at half time.

The Priory A team needed to start the second half like they had done the first but a boot up field from Spartans kick off was not dealt with by defender Udall and this lack in concentration resulted in Spartan’s striker with an easy opportunity to score which he took to make the game 3-2 to Priory just 15 seconds of the second half had been played.

A lot could be said about the Priory’s lack of fitness due to some players playing with injuries and heads dropping after that second goal. However, perhaps the most important reason why Priory collapsed in the second half was Shelton Spartan’s Manager changing their formation to having three in the centre of midfield and using arguably their best player, their No 12 to boss and completely change the game. He was everywhere and won everything in the air. How Priory missed their star player due to sickness, Justin Branden who would have been able to deal with him.

The result was that Priory’s shape went and Shelton Spartans took advantage scoring 6 in the second half. A consolation goal was scored with 5 minutes to go by Priory’s striker Paul Hodges but the damage had already been done.

Next week sees Priory A team play Racing Epsom and Manager Stu Porte will hope that his team have more fighting spirit in that game than was shown in the second half of this. He will also be hoping that Justin Branden and Alex Holmes will be available to sure up the midfield.

Redhill & District Division Three (DOUBLE HEADER)

REIGATE PRIORY A 0  WOODCOTE OB 4

WOODCOTE OB 6  REIGATE PRIORY A 0

The Priory ‘A’ Team were always at a disadvantage against the top team in the Division even before the game due to arguably three of the best players either being promoted to the Priory reserves or unavailable.

This was the first double header that The Priory A team were facing over the next few weeks and Manager, Stuart Porte will hope that selection is much better, as the Priory A team turned up with only 14 of which 3 players were carrying injuries.

Woodcote completely dominated both 1 hour matches using their home pitch to their advantage with the uneven slope. At no stage did The Priory A team even get in either game as Woodcote were better in every area of the pitch. The Priory A team found Woodcote’s main weapon being their height and strenght, at least four of their players were well over 6 foot.  As a result most goals were either scored by corners or by a long throw into the heart of Priory box, where one of these four would put the ball into the net.

The results would have been far worse if it were not for some great last ditch defending from sweeper Chris Dalton and some fantastic saves from keeper, Gus Milne.

A thoroughly disappointing day for the Priory A team.

REIGATE PRIORY A 1  RACING EPSOM 2

The Priory ‘A’ Team competed in a well fought game against one of the top sides in the Division, Racing Epsom. Priory A’s had a fairly weakened team as a couple of key players were either injured or unavailable to play, however the team spirit was once again fantastic!

The Priory A team played some great football in the first half by some slick passing from the back and through midfield using the speed of Tim Austin down the right and Alex Holmes down the left, however they let themselves down with the distribution in the final third. Racing Epsom were somewhat surprised by the display from Reigate Priory and it was only in the latter 20 minutes of the first half that Racing Epsom started to dominate play. During this period of the game, two defensive errors by The Priory defence resulted in Racing Epsom leading 2-0 at half time.

A motivational talk by Priory’s Manager, Stuart Porte saw the second half completely dominated by the Priory team. The problem was that although Reigate Priory had most of the possession, they could not score until 5 minutes to go. Priory’s goal came from a 30 yard diagonal ball from Dan Udall at the back, Neil Sinnick nicely brought the ball down on his left foot and then ran down the left side of the Racing Epsom defence driving the ball across the goal mouth and the ball was met by a superb acrobatic volley from Adam Jones into Racing Epsom’s net. A serious contender for goal of the season! Priory then attacked aggressively for the last remaining minutes but unfortunately ran out of time to score another goal. Perhaps if Priory scored earlier in the second half the result would have been very different.

SHELTON SPARTON 2 REIGATE PRIORY A 0

Another frustrating game for The Priory ‘A’ Team saw them lose to a Shelton Spartans side that would feel very fortunate to come away with 3 points from the game.

The Priory A team completely dominated the first half playing some extremely attractive football and creating chance after chance. Rob Besley made a big impact in the centre of midfield with his brilliant passing and with Tim Austin’s pace at right midfield, Priory dominated play down Shelton Spartans left side. This created the strike force of Mark Hadley and Adam Jones with plenty of half chances but it was at corners where The Priory should have made their possession count. Shelton Spartans were bombarded by corner after corner but Priory could not get the ball into the back of the net even though they hit the post from a corner and also saw a couple of clearances of the line. The only way it looked as if Shelton Spartans would score was on the counter attack.

The first 25 minutes of the second half saw a more positive display from the home side as Shelton Spartans were more of a handful for The Reigate Priory. From this passage of play Spartans had a couple of corners, of which one resulted in a good strong header from one of their centre midfield into Priory’s net.

This was the wake up call Priory needed and minutes later a route one ball from the back got over Spartans defence. Adam Jones ran onto the ball and flicked it over the goalkeeper and as the Priory players started to cheer the ball bounced onto the post. Priory were then awarded two penalties within a matter of minutes of one another but the Spartans goalkeeper made two marvellous saves to deny Adam Jones and then Justin Branden their glory. The Priory still dominated by pushing men up to get something from the game and got caught on the break with a few minutes to go and one of Spartans strikers scored.

REIGATE PRIORY 'A'  1   OVERTON ATHLETIC  4

Stephen1

Another tough game for the A’s against a side that were promoted from Div four last season, albeit as Sutton Churches not Overton Athletic. Trying out the 4-4-2 diamond formation, trying to play to their strengths, the A’s didn’t really get to grips with it as Overton’s pace and movement in the centre of the park proved too much. With two early goals and an injury to Baker, Priory was forced to revert to a traditional formation and that, coupled with the introduction of Tim Donald out wide, proved to be a turning point. The A’s really started to play some good football with Besley linking well with Stephen up front and Hodges and Donald working hard out wide. Telford and Porte got to grips with the midfield and the back four of Austin, Hale, Edge-Partington and Peters defended with great determination.

The second half got under way and for the first five or ten minutes Priory were not at the races and gave away a sloppy penalty after the very impressive Edge-Partington was deemed to have bought down their striker after a tangle of legs felled them both. Keeper Gus Milne didn’t stand a chance as their forward dispatched it with aplomb. Half way through the second half and player manager Porte had to take himself of after running himself into the ground. On came Dave Hall and with a switch round, Hodges went into the centre and looked very impressive.  Priory finished the game the stronger of the two sides and got a well deserved consolation goal. With the ball breaking from the back, it got to Richard on the halfway line, he ran at the fullback, beat him with ease then sidestepped the keeper and passed the ball into the net. Overton did score a fourth goal before that but despite the score line Priory can take a lot of pride from this game, with the work rate and attitude of every single player on the pitch second to none. Tim Donald did exceptionally well out wide as did Hodges and Telford in the middle as well as Fred Edge-Partington at the back. If the A’s can keep up the same team spirit and determination they showed today the results should start to come.

Team; Milne, Peters, Edge-Partington, Hale, Austin, Hodges, Telford, Porte, Baker, Besley, Stephen. Subs; Hall, Donald.

COURT LODGE (2) 7  REIGATE PRIORY 'A'  (0) 1

                                 WilliamsD1

Not a great start to the season for the A team as they came up against a very fit and skilful side in Court Lodge.  Although the Priory fielded an experienced side, they lacked pace and were consistently exposed as they also failed to keep the ball, giving away possession far too easily and not working hard enough as a team to win it back. That said it was a game that the A’s were not expected to win and a tough match was anticipated right from the start.

The Priory put in a good shift in the first half going off only 2 down when it could have been a lot worse, but also had a couple of good chances to score themselves. Goalkeeper Gus Milne pulled off some great stops to keep Priory in it and the midfield pairing of Porte, and, especially new comer Justin Branden worked hard to break up play through the middle. The back four of Beckett, Baker, Dalton and Captain Nick Hale coped well with wave after wave of attacks as Court Lodge’s superiority showed. Paul Hodges and Harry Martin worked tirelessly up front but were starved of any real service and were up against an extremely well organised and strong defence. Frost and Williams out wide showed some promise going forward, getting in behind the defence on a couple of occasions.

The second half started and if only Priory could get one goal back they would still be in the game, but with the Priory’s older legs tiring and the failure to keep the ball when attacking, Court Lodge took full advantage and went two or three goals further ahead before the introduction of subs Doyle and playmaker Besley. With the game already out of reach maybe Court Lodge were relaxing a bit but the Priory started to string passes together and began to penetrate, with Besley pulling the strings. Priory did score a good consolation goal, after some fine interplay; Hodges pulled the ball back for Williams to slot home confidently. There are positives to take from this game and given time to gel as a team and maybe the addition of a bit of pace at the back Priory need to build on the performance in the last quarter of this match.

Team; G. Milne, K. Beckett, N. Hale, C. Dalton, A. Baker, D. Williams, S. Porte, J. Branden, G. Frost, H. Martin, P. Hodges. Subs; R. Besley, S. Doyle.
