Reigate Priory 1 – 4 Oxted (11th August 2018)

Reigate Priory hosted Oxted at Netherne on Saturday 11th August. Priory had comfortably beaten their opponents in pre-season last year and were quietly confident of a repeat performance against a team playing a division below them this season.

James Long put the home side one nil up early on when he coolly slotted past the young goalkeeper when one on one. Priory almost doubled their lead midway through the first half when a short corner routine led to Jason Woolsey’s powerful drive cannoning off the upright and across the face of the goal to safety.

Scott Johnson saved Priory blushes shortly after by clearing off the line after Halsey partially saved, but the lead was short-lived as an Oxted player drove at the Priory defence and hit a twenty-five yard screamer in the top corner that left Halsey no chance.

Early in the second half a well-executed lob put the away side in front, followed shortly after by a deflected shot in a crowded box after Priory failed to clear their lines from a corner.

Late on the Reigate side’s misery was compounded when a clearance from Halsey was charged down by the Oxted forward and his strike partner reacted quickest to turn the ball into an empty net. Priory had plenty of shots at goals but none that really troubled the visiting goalkeeper. A disappointing result for Priory; 1-4, but one positive, was the debut of young full-back Cole Popper; a product of Dorking Wanderers academy .

Line Up/Squad: Halsey, Leask, Reid, Johnson, Popper, Hughes (capt.), Long, Winnister, Charles, McLaughlin, Woolsey, Osei, Saurombe.
